DEVELOPMENT AT A GLANCE

CONSTRUCTION STARTS

Development continued to increase in Highlands County in fiscal year 2015-2016. The county experienced a 38 percent increase in new commercial buildings and a 64 percent increase of commercial interior remodels. On paper, new housing starts were down 30 percent from the prior year. However, the previous year had higher-than-usual new starts related to the development of Cornell Colony, which was permitted for 44 single family residences.
